Day 4

I'm quite surprised that I've felt the need to say something about my braces for 4 days in a row...odd. Oh well! Um well let's see shall we start with the good or bad news?

BAD

Well I think I already mentioned that the wax has not been sticking to my brackets but whatever. This one bracket is legit stabbing me. The little hook where I'm assuming in the future rubber bands will go is hooking it self into my damn inside lip! Gah it hurts! When I go to my ortho Thursday I'm getting them to stick the wax on for me because clearly I'm incapable of doing so. Let's move on to good news.

For the first time with my braces I have been out in public and seen by people other than my family and ortho. I went to church then my friends house to go to the mall. I forget how it came up but I told her I had braces and she was like "REALLY? I didn't even notice!" Damn that makes me feel good. Glad these ceramic braces are doing their job! That's really it. Blah bye I need to finish homework.

Bye for now!

WAIT! No! Something else good I forgot to mention! I was starving at the mall so of course where am I gonna find apple sauce and soup lol so I went and got teriyaki (definitely spelled that wrong!) chicken and it was cut up into tiny pieces so I figured I'd be okay. So I did what the ortho told me and chewed it with my back teeth...ehh it wasn't awful! I've had worse pain. Believe me! Okeyy now I'm done talking so...bye again!

Day 3: WAX WON'T STICK!

Ughhhhhhh now all of the sudden I'm being poked to death by one my brackets on the bottom of my mouth. Every time I smile or laugh it digs into my mouth AHHHHHHHHH! That wax my ortho gave me does NOT work! So here I am just sitting in pain trying not to smile or laugh.

Eating is getting slightly easier as is brushing my teeth.

Going through a popcorn withdraw.

Bye for now :-\

Day 2: FOOD and braces

Eating with braces is currently the same as it was when I had my spacers in. My diet has consisted of soup, apple sauce, and yogurt. Yesterday my mom mashed up banana for me so yay one more food I can eat. My teeth don't hurt as bad today but they still feel bad awkward. My mom made me perogies for lunch. If you don't know what that is. They are basically like ravioli but with potato inside. If you still have no idea what I'm talking about this is what they look like...
you can boil them and cook it like pasta or you can fry them. We boiled it so they would be softer to eat! So yayy one more food I can eat! My mom also came back from the store and bought:
  • box of mashed potatoes(the kind you add water and stick in the microwave)
  • sweet potatoes, fruit cups
  • more bananas
  • eggs(I'm planning on making scrambled eggs later...I need calcium too!)
  • potato pancakes(latkes...no I'm not Jewish but they taste amazing and it's another food to eat!)
  • more soup
  • and straws!
I'm hoping to be able to eat more solid foods soon!

So last night my orthodontist called my mom. He asked how I was feeling and such. It was kinda nice that he called. And today in the mail I got a letter from him. It pretty much just said what was wrong with my teeth and what is getting fixed with braces on. Ooo and and and...it said 24 months with braces! I know that's 2 years but honestly I've known people to have braces for much longer! I'm praying it isn't longer than 2 years. I'd like to graduate college brace free!
One more thing before I go. Brushing my teeth last night was a bitch. It was not easy. That dental floss threader is so hard to use. I have to like hold up/down my lips while trying to get the stupid dental floss through my wires. Gah. I hope it gets easier.

If any one is actually reading this...how long does it take to start seeing changes in your teeth with braces? Even if it's not a dramatic change I'm still curious. It would definitely make me feel better seeing a change in my teeth so I know that these train tracks in my mouth are actually doing their job!
Off to brush my teeth. Hopefully it'll go better than it did yesterday!

Bye for now :D

Brace yourself! Day 1

Let me just begin by saying this was one of the most un-enjoyable experiences ever.

Alright first she cleaned my teeth with this nasty pumice toothpaste. Then I went to rinse my mouth out (there will be a lot of rinsing!) Then she cleaned my teeth, rinsed.

Then she put this beauty in my mouth...
Cute huh?! Not my mouth though lol this was from google :-P

Then there's a lot of water and suctioning.

Then she painted on this nasty like glue crap on my bottom teeth and started to place the brackets on. After that she called the orthodontist over to look at them to make sure they were on straight and such. Then she got this blue light device thing and she just shined it on each bracket. The same process happened for the top teeth. This part wasn't too painful except they use a lot of pressure to make sure the brackets are secured to your teeth.

After the brackets are they take the lip retractor out. Anddd you go rinse your mouth out!

Next was what I found to be the most painful part. They removed the spacers and put the bands on my teeth. Holy shit that was painful! They shove this little metal band...

over 1 molar on the top and bottom on the left and right sides of your mouth. This part was horrible! They tell you to bite down on this little stick too to make sure they are down all the ways. To make this especially nice and painful for me, I had to do this process twice because they needed to put a bigger size on my teeth. I honestly teared up a bit that's how bad it hurt! Maybe I just have a low tolerance for pain but in my opinion this was horrible.

Almost done! They put the wire on the brackets and you can pick your color rubber band thingy you want to go over the wire and on your brackets...I picked clear.

Last part! They tell you the foods you can't eat and my orho gave me a waterbottle filled with dental goodies lol which included wax (to put on the braces if they are poking at your lips) floss, tooth brush, dental mirror, a 2 minute egg timeer, and some other stuff.

Currently I am in a shit ton of pain. My lips like go out weird and feel so strange. I have a freaking lisp now. I'm just in pain to quite honest. I took Tylenol earlier. I'm hungry but I'm scared that it's really going to hurt. Obviously I have to eat sooner or later lol but right now...not happening.

The only bright side is that 2 years from now I'm gonna have a hot smile!

Gross right? Bleh

Well until next time...

Consultation

So on Tuesday I went to the orthodontist for a braces consultation. When I first got there this woman took pictures of me. She took them of me smiling with my teeth showing, not with my teeth, my profile, the inside of my mouth, then took a bunch of xrays including one that went all around my head. That was the easy part.

After we just talked to the lady for a bit like why I wanted braces and such. And in case you are wondering. Well I've had crooked teeth all my life and I've just never felt confident with my smile. It sucks to be 19 going on 20 in less than a month, but I'd rather get them now rather than later.

So after that she left and the orthodontist came in looked in my mouth and talked to us for a bit about my treatment plan. He left and then the lady came back in and talked to my mom and I about the cost and the types of braces. I decided to go with the ceramic kind because they are less noticeable and I'd rather not look like a 12 year old in college with colored braces. I already look young as it is!

Then they checked to see if there was time to get impressions (moldings) of my teeth or if we'd have to set up another appointment. Luckily I was able to get them that day. Basically for the impressions, they have like this mouth guard looking thing filled with this nasty ass pink gunk. The mouth guard thing smelled like watermelon so that wasn't too bad. The molding gunk however was disgusting! When they pulled it off of my teeth it kinda hurt.

Once they finished taking impressions of my top and bottom teeth they got these little purple rubber bands and pretty much shoved them in between my teeth. OUCH! They hurt! They put one rubber band on each side of 1 molar on the left and ride, top and bottom, sides of my mouth. In all, I had 8 of those little bitches stuck in my teeth.
This picture is basically how they put spacers on except I didn't need 3 on one side!

Now thank goodness I only had to wear them a few days. By the way these little rubber bands are called spacers. They are used to well space out your teeth so that when you are getting your braces on it won't hurt as bad getting the metal band over those molars. I'm not gonna sugar coat this and say they don't hurt because they do! It starts hurting a couple hours after you have gotten them on. They feel like you have popcorn kernels stuck in your teeth. I honestly wanted to just yank those fucking things out of my mouth!

Soo yeah. These 2  1/2 days I had them in I could only eat really soft foods because it hurt so much to chew. My diet legit consisted of chicken noodle soup, apple sauce, and yogurt.

Stay tuned for my next post about getting the braces on!

Bye for now :)

First Post!

Hey there! My name is Emily and as of 3 minutes ago I decided I want to document my whole braces journey. I have needed them for the longest time and I'm 19 turning 20 in August and I am now just getting braces. I was thinking about making a youtube account to document my time with braces but I sometimes feel awkward talking to the camera, I always mess up with what I want to say, and I think it is 10x easier just writing stuff down and taking pictures and such.

Well this was just a quick intro about why I'm making this blog. There will be a couple posts soon to come today.

Bye for now!
