So on Tuesday I went to the orthodontist for a braces consultation. When I first got there this woman took pictures of me. She took them of me smiling with my teeth showing, not with my teeth, my profile, the inside of my mouth, then took a bunch of xrays including one that went all around my head. That was the easy part.
After we just talked to the lady for a bit like why I wanted braces and such. And in case you are wondering. Well I've had crooked teeth all my life and I've just never felt confident with my smile. It sucks to be 19 going on 20 in less than a month, but I'd rather get them now rather than later.
So after that she left and the orthodontist came in looked in my mouth and talked to us for a bit about my treatment plan. He left and then the lady came back in and talked to my mom and I about the cost and the types of braces. I decided to go with the ceramic kind because they are less noticeable and I'd rather not look like a 12 year old in college with colored braces. I already look young as it is!
Then they checked to see if there was time to get impressions (moldings) of my teeth or if we'd have to set up another appointment. Luckily I was able to get them that day. Basically for the impressions, they have like this mouth guard looking thing filled with this nasty ass pink gunk. The mouth guard thing smelled like watermelon so that wasn't too bad. The molding gunk however was disgusting! When they pulled it off of my teeth it kinda hurt.
Once they finished taking impressions of my top and bottom teeth they got these little purple rubber bands and pretty much shoved them in between my teeth. OUCH! They hurt! They put one rubber band on each side of 1 molar on the left and ride, top and bottom, sides of my mouth. In all, I had 8 of those little bitches stuck in my teeth.
This picture is basically how they put spacers on except I didn't need 3 on one side!
Now thank goodness I only had to wear them a few days. By the way these little rubber bands are called spacers. They are used to well space out your teeth so that when you are getting your braces on it won't hurt as bad getting the metal band over those molars. I'm not gonna sugar coat this and say they don't hurt because they do! It starts hurting a couple hours after you have gotten them on. They feel like you have popcorn kernels stuck in your teeth. I honestly wanted to just yank those fucking things out of my mouth!
Soo yeah. These 2 1/2 days I had them in I could only eat really soft foods because it hurt so much to chew. My diet legit consisted of chicken noodle soup, apple sauce, and yogurt.
Stay tuned for my next post about getting the braces on!
Bye for now :)
Emily
